Snapchat: No Longer Just a Way to Look Like a Puppy

Screen Shot 2016-10-18 at 7.32.24 PM.pngTo most of us, Snapchat has given us the necessary resources (or filters) to look like Sia or a cute puppy when we’re having bad hair days. Now, Snapchat wants to be known for more than just that.

Early last month, the CSO of Snapchat said he was planning on rebranding the idea of Snapchat as just an app.

“We rebranded our company to Snap Inc. because we are bigger than just one app,” Kahn said. “Snap Inc. is a camera company—we believe that reinventing the camera represents our greatest opportunity to improve the way people live and communicate”

Currently on Snap Inc.’s website there are links to Snapchat and Spectacles. In a post by CEO Evan Spiegel on the company website, he states that the company needed to rebrand as they expand. Snapchat is still Snapchat, but now within Snap Inc.

With the release of the new name, came new glasses. These high-tech sunglasses called “spectacles,” can record 10-second videos, charge in their case and connect to your Snapchat. Sadly, you’re going to have to be old fashioned and record your Snapchats on your IPhone 7 because these bad boys haven’t been released yet.

The glasses will be released slowly and will most likely be gifted to relevant Snapchat celebrities first, such as DJ Khaled.

This rebrand comes almost a month after Instagram released its “Instagram Stories,” a feature that strongly resembles Snapchat.

Could it be that Snap Inc. is rebranding to stay relevant in the competitive app world? Only time will tell.
