Final exams getting you down? Stay cool, calm and collected. You’re going to get through it! There are numerous ways to calm yourself down after you’ve been at Marston for nine hours straight and you THINK all you need is another venti iced caramel half-whole milk, one quarter 1%, one quarter non-fat, no foam latte, with whip cream; but that is NOT what you need. You have 5 easy alternatives…
1. Go outside and take a walk
You might think this sounds silly, but taking a quick walk around campus can seriously clear your head (not from all the information you just memorized, just from the stress). A brisk walk can help you live a healthier life. It can prevent and manage problems with your heart, blood pressure, and muscles. And if you’re lucky, and catch the sun on your walk, it’ll relax your bones with the extra vitamin D your body will be producing. So, go outside and get some fresh air.

2. Listen to your favorite song
Many people listen to music while they study. This is not what this means. You need to leave the library. Go somewhere quiet — or somewhere loud, if that helps YOU. You’d be surprised what listening to “I’m Yours” by Jason Maraz, or “Hey Jude” by the Beatles, or…well…you get the point, can do to your mood.

3. Plan your study routine
This option has a little bit of a catch; you can only use it while paired with another option. Planning your study routine can be extremely helpful. Most of the time it will bring you to the realization that you have time — that you don’t need to stress, but it is most helpful to your health for you to plan your studying for the week and THEN listen to a song or take a walk to clear your head…

4. Take a nap
Naps are a powerful tool for self-improvement. They increase individuals health, well-being, intelligence and productivity, too. All of the cool kids are doing it… Famous thinkers and leaders like Edison, JFK, Napoleon, and Einstein were all nappers. states that a short nap of 20-30 minutes can help to improve mood, alertness and performance. Basically, if you want to ace your finals like Einstein would: take a nap.

5. Let it out
This is my absolute favorite one. LET IT OUT. Go talk to someone. No, I don’t mean a shrink. Go gossip with your girl friends or find your boys for a short distraction. Call your mom, brother, grandpa, OR GO TO THE STARBUCKS BARISTA — literally anyone who will listen. Say whatever you want about how stressed you are, say you’re going to bomb your exam, say you’re going to ace it, say you’re quitting school. It doesn’t matter — because the second your done screaming your head into a pillow you are going to go straight back to your books and finish what you started. You can do this.

When that chem, history, or for the unlucky freshman: good life final finally comes around don’t forget to avoid rushing, to remember to breathe, to take a break if you need to, and to check over your work.

I believe in all of you. Good luck and happy studying!
